Yes, I love the movie Elf! No, it has nothing to do with boudoir photography. But I came across this and was interested in how they make Will Farrell look so much bigger than the other elves. The sequence I am going to talk about is about the 2:30 mark. Watch the video and then we will talk about angles and perspective in boudoir sessions.
So you can see that when they sat Will closer to the camera he looked huge compared to the other elves. I am guessing they used a longer lens to compress the scene so everyone appears to be closer together. The same technique can be used in boudoir pictures. Want to make your hips look bigger? How about making them smaller? How about your bust? Want longer legs? You can have these if your photographer chooses flattering angles.
What do you see first in the above image? Remember whatever is closest to the camera will look the largest. I notice her hips first because they are closest to the camera, and have an extra touch of light direct there. When she saw this on the back of my camera she said, "Hey, I really have a butt!" I hear you saying, "But Hudson, what if my butt is bigger than I want to see?" Simply do the opposite- push your hips away from the camera to slim. That's what I am here for! Now, let's look at featuring a bustline.
When I posed brides I asked them to lean towards the lens a bit and push your hips back. I would explain to them that the camera sees this as your bust being bigger and your waistline is smaller. I would jokingly ask them if that was ok? Surprisingly not a one said no! See how she is leaning in here? Yes, her legs are closer to the lens but leaning forward just a little accentuates her bust. Next, let's see how to make longer legs.
When someone asks me to show off her legs, I don't bring them up close to the camera. We want them to look longer, not pudgy, right? Let's do this another way. To make legs look longer always point the toes. Why do you think high heels were invented? They make the legs look longer. (I encourage women during our pre-planning hour to bring a pair of high heels to their boudoir session.) When not wearing high heels, I would always point the toes. This is easier when laying down, but, warning, this is not easy while standing! But it is well worth the extra effort!
I hope you enjoyed reading this as much as I enjoyed writing! Creating the best image of you is why I do this!
