Exaggerate!

Yes, I'm loving the mood black and white gives the image. But the thing that accentuates this pose for boudoir is the exaggeration. She could have just laid on the floor and arched her back. But the stretch is what makes the pose. Your boudoir session is an extension of you and your femininity. And exaggeration is the key.  Notice how every part of her body is stretched. Her neck, her back, even her feet and toes are elongated. That helps her look taller and feminine. This is not how you lay around the house. It is definitely a way of getting away from the comfort zone!

I know that leaving the comfort zone can be, well, uncomfortable! Let me give a personal example of the feeling of exaggeration. I was in a couple musicals when I was in high school. Right off the bat the director was telling me to project. I am normally a non-loud person. Especially in high school where I was kind of shy. So this was a pretty unnatural feeling for me. Then Miss Andrews, our director, told me I need to exaggerate my actions. My first thought was that no one is going to believe what I was doing. But the opposite is true. I learned that by projecting and exaggerating that it sold my character. That was especially evident when I sand my big solo, "Sit Down You're Rockin' the Boat." Yes, it felt weird at first, but the final product was almost overwhelming.

The same holds true with photography. I've learned a lot of technical stuff over the years, but what sells a portrait is the life in the portrait. I want to get you out of your everyday self and into the star that you are. Things will seem weird at first. You may be uncomfortable and think that your photographer is crazy. (Not the first time I've been accused of that!)  But you will see that doing what you are not used to will produce great results. " To get something you've never had you have to do something you've never done." That is hard for most of us.

Just one more thing. I remember when I started wedding photography. Kevin, a veteran photographer, came to help me. While we were doing the formals, he said to me, "You've got to get them going." What? Me? How do I do that? It's funny now because after a few weddings it became almost natural. But that first feeling of directing was not a part of me. Now, I encourage and inspire and try to help you with actions that you don't experience everyday. You will hear me say things like, "Arch your back. Kick your hips out! More! Stretch! Point those toes! Give me that look!" You will have so much fun because it is just like being a model for a day!

Still think you're not ready? You are more ready than you think! And I am there to direct! Call me today and let's talk about your personal boudoir photo session.
